Designing a Calm Corner
Every home has one quiet spot that a pet will claim as their own. A few notes on finding it, and making it somewhere they actually settle.
Watch a dog or cat for a week and they will tell you where their corner is. It is almost never the middle of a room. It is the edge of things — beside a sofa, under a window, at the end of a hallway where they can see who comes and goes.
The mistake is to place the bed where it looks best and hope they follow. They rarely do.
Back to something solid
Most animals settle faster with their back against a wall or a piece of furniture. It narrows the number of directions they have to keep an eye on, which is the whole business of relaxing.
Corners, alcoves and the space beside a bookshelf tend to win over open floor every time.
Light, warmth and traffic
Cats will follow the sun across a room through the day, so a spot that catches morning light is often the one they choose. Dogs more often prefer cool floors in summer and soft, raised surfaces in winter.
Avoid the walkways. A bed in a doorway or beside a busy kitchen counter is a bed that gets interrupted, and an interrupted bed does not get used.
Keep it consistent
Once the corner is established, resist moving it. Familiar smell is a large part of why a bed works, so wash covers on rotation rather than all at once, and keep the location fixed even when you rearrange around it.
A calm corner is not a product. It is a place, and the things you put in it are only there to make the place easier to choose.
